"backpacking" Kuala Lumpar
Chance upon this "Travel Journal" the other day while flipping thru my books. It was a so called "Backpacking Trip" to KL in Yr 2003, 3rd to 5 Sep.
It was a implusive decision and all the arrangements were very very last min. Went wif PA, Shahid and Pei Khuan.
Uncensored, Unedited, i present to you, my very first travel Journal. (my english that time and mayb nw is unpolished hor so pls bear wif it)
Pre-trip Preparations:
Negotations over the phone (conference call) for 2 days. Rush decision finally made on monday nite.
2nd sep-Pi Khuan and Shahid went to Malaysia to get the coach tixs first.
3rd Sep
Heard rumours abt the security of Malaysia, quite make me feel like not gg anymore. Emmeline says its too late, we wont be so unlucky. Pei Khuan was late for the meeting us in school so we arrived late at Woodlands Checkpoint. Upon reaching JB, we dashed our way to the travel agency. We were late and we ran like hell...bt its fun! Cause i felt like we were filming an eposide of the "Amazing Race"! In the end, the coach havent arrived yet.
Mum called me, she seems quite worried so i left her Emmeline's hse no, she did the same...In case of any "EMERGENCY".
Finally board the coach. Not bad,shldnt ask for too much. E fellow passengers are pretty noisy with their HP ring tones. Dont dare to say anything...The journey was pretty long, from 8 something to about 1 something then we reach KL.
4th Sep
E moment we are still at the stairway of the bus, there are already taxis drivers offering business/ services. We seemed blur and tired, sleepy .....just woke up.
Kena cheated by 1 taxi driver-(e dirty old man) charged us RM20 for only a short distance and take us to the 'Star Town Inn/ Motel'. The taxi driver must be in cahoots with the mgt of the 'Star Town Inn'. There must be a commission for him.
I tink e Inn/Motel looks ok...pretty good though bt the 3 of the dnt tink likewise. Especially Shahid, he says e sight of the toilet spoils his mood...no mood to bath anymore. Pei Khuan, fall asleep pretty fast and he make sure we know that he's asleep by....snoring! Shahid likes to make fun of Pei Khuan's snores. Finally went to bed at abt 4 something.
Woke up pretty early. Had some problem waking Pei Khuan up. Emmeline cant wait to go shopping and keeps nagging them. Finally checked out that hotel...oh, shld call it a motel instead.
Went in search of a better hotel. Visited Swiss garden, Novotel Century KL and e other dun knw called wat liao. The rates are too expensive bt i personally quite like the Novotel Century cause got pool leh. However it wasnt in our list as its too expensive. (no chance to use my swimsuit) Finally found a gd bargain... NOva Hotel..looks posh bt small yet cheap. RM120. Everyone is satisfied. E toilet is a bonus!!! A bit classy.
Made our way out for lunch. All e way to KL, we had KFC for our first meal in KL. But amazing...KFC in KL tastes gd except for the colesaw. KL KFC are served in plates with knives and forks...just my kind. Chilli sauce are in bottles. Truly enjoyed my first meal in KL.
Shopping
First stop:
BB Plaza Choco station where Pei Khuan brought soem choco. Went to guardian Pharmacy, bought a colgate toothpaste cause the 4 of us, only Shahid brought toothpaste to KL. (tat miserable small tube of toothpaste). Found a cute thing...E Pepper Spray that Emmeline invented as a precaution against robbers!!! They have it already.
We shopped ard the shopping malls nearby...Sungei Wang.
I bought a long sleeve blouse. RM 39.90 E price tag design looks nice to me. Shop name: Romp.
I feel that most of the sales persons are nt tat friendly though.
Its nice to shop wif guys. Helped us carry the thing. Emmeline and i bought a lychee bubble freeze/ ice blend while Pei Khuan and Shahid bought e strawberry ice blend. Shop Name: Cup-Bon. E lychee tastes nice but e strawberry...tastes like medicine. We took 4 different colors of straws. Mine is light pink, Emmeline's is dark pink, Pei Khuan is green and Shahid's yellow (i tink). E sight of the cup wif 4 different colors looks memorable to me. Told Emmeline to take a photo....as she claimed that she did bring her sis's camera along but she couldnt find it even though a search warrant was issued to her bag. So in the end, i brought the cup and straws back to Spore....waiting to be photographed. The 3 of them were pretty .....
Continued to shop ard and then we discovered that the shopping malls are actually link together and the link is not obvious at all. When it comes to bargaining prices, we gotta have Pei Khuan and Shahid ard as the shop assistants called e both of them 'leng zai'.
The 3 of them bought quite a lot of stuff though.
Evening time, we bought sme snacks and headed back to the hotel for a rest. Everyone looks tired except Emmeline...still energetic. Started to count the money. Shahid began to write down how much he spent....i told him why not just count how much he had left instead.
Impt point 4got:
-pei Khuan bought a set of 10 pigs for $10.
-4 of us took neoprints as memory. E neoprints is damn exp in KL... $12 SGD. Initially, we wanted to take 2 times but took only once. When designing the photos, Pei Khuan was busy arranging his pigs cause they collapsed. At th most critical time, Emmeline wif her itchy hands added 'heart shapes' to one of the prints! E 2 guys were pretty pissed off but Emmeline thinks nothing abt it. So e 4 of us make a promise to keep the 'heart print' properly!
After a rest at the hotel, we began debating wat time to leave for the next place. Shahid starts to plan but i say i only had tml bfast in mind....he then act angry?????
Only nw then i realise KL dun really have any english channels...Took out my 8days. Shahid say "me and my 8days" He commented that the 8days mag i cn read for 8 days havent finish...(dun dare read 8days infrnt of him again)
Emmeline dun dare to let Pei Khuan sleep, fear that hard to wake him up. We set off at abt 7.30pm, to Twin Towers and Khenara KL Tower. We gave the Che Chong Kai a miss...much to Emmeline's dismay. Dun knw walk for dun knw hw long, cross hw many streets and dun knw see hw mang police officers then we finally reach Twin Towers. ...bt its closes at 5.30pm! Wasted trip bt i bought a post card, at least better than nothing. E Twin Towers looks kinda grand and classy...like Raffles City.
No choice, make our way to Menara KL Tower. Its a slope to climb up lor. Pei Khuan checked with the security. E tower closes at 10.00pm. Time check, 9.15pm. It was only at the ticketing counter then we know that malaysians had an offer rate at RM8 while we, international tourists at RM15. Already there, die die also must go up! As the evalator accends, there's an impact on my ear...must be the height. Dun play play, its 276m! They claimed that they are the 4 th tallest tower in e world.
The night view of KL is quite exhilarating. Emmeline quote smething like this to me "e world is so big and wat everyone does is so tiny...wat we do is so insignificant. E so call "big trouble /problems we have seems so insignificant when you look at the big pic".
I tried my best to capture the whole sight in my mind. E staff seemed so eager to go home, keep chasing us out of the Tower. We a rest at the KL Tower's fountain. We sat there and talked for abt 1&1/2 to 2hrs. Dun knw why Pei Khuan likes to play wif the fountain even though a worker sneezed and washed his hands in there!
We walked slowly back to the hotel, we kinda lost our way. But still managed to on the right track. Went in search of the toilet and chance upon this Allson Genesis Hotel. E receptionist (black man) is v friendly ...a gd man. He handed us the card to the toilet. Oh man, the toilet is e best toilet we have ever been to in KL. E tiles are all black in colour and mst importantly, they have toilet paper!
Our dinner was settled with the food stalls near our hotel. Emmeline and i shared Char Kwa Tiao, Frogs porridge, Fried La La, desert. Weird abt the fried lala. The hawker says the price for 2 serving is $10 so we naturally tot that the price for 1 serving is $5. but we are wrong.Its $8!
I didnt realise hw hungry we were until Shahid made a comment days later that we were eating like hungry ghosts!
5th Sep
The last day, we started with a great bfast at the hotel while the guys r still sleeping. Its one of the best meals i had in KL. Then we quickly went out to grab sme presents for our frenes who didnt manage to mke it wif us.
Pei Khaun said that Emmeline wnt leave until she had spent all her money!
The bus ride back was long and warm....too warm that i cnt even sleep.
Reached hme at ard 9.30pm...and a pile of wk waiting for me.
